Balancing Depression and Diabetes Treatment

As men and women with diabetes started to develop mood disorders affecting their functioning and mental capacity, health care providers are trying to determine how to manage their treatment properly. The argument between which comes first, depression or diabetes, medical experts would answer that both of them may cause the other because depression is a risk factor for diabetes and the other way around. Managing these two illnesses needs discipline for the patient, medical experts say. Being unable to take the medications specifically for mood disorders may result to withdrawal symptoms; thus, patients need to take them regularly without fail.

From the reports of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about one in every 10 adults in the United States of America develop severely depressed moods which may even prevent them from performing adequate self-care. Meanwhile, diabetes often co-exists with different illness which affects 35 percent of adults and is considered to be the seventh leading cause of death in the country, according to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC). The National Institute of Mental Health, on the other hand, believes that treating depression may significantly improve the condition of men and women suffering from diabetes.

However, psychiatrists say that there is still a problem with treating depression because it remains to be underdiagnosed in most of the cases. Diagnosis is regarded as the first step of management because proper diagnosis enables the health care provider to give the proper remedy. Thus, if mood disorders continue to be diagnosed less often than needed adequate and immediate care is not given.

When the diagnosis is determined, patients may be referred to a psychiatrist for the management of mood disorders. Medications and therapy may be given accordingly. Psychotherapy is known as talk therapy and it used in many cases. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are one of the medications used for severe negative thoughts, although after thorough research these formulations were seen to cause increased suicidal thoughts and raises risk of birth defects. For this reason, the Zoloft lawsuit help center have been receiving cases from patients who believe that Zoloft caused them to experience negative symptoms.
